Artist's Statement of Purpose
During my studies at San Jose State University, I have drawn parallels between the frontier of the digital age and the frontier of the old American West. Both began as new, exciting, and expansive territories to build upon, forge new paths, and advance as a culture. But now, both frontiers have now been thoroughly explored and settled, often in the hands of the powerful at the expense of others, or even freedoms themselves.
I struggle deeply with the way things seem to have shaken out in the 21st century. The landscape of the internet, once a beacon of promise and enlightenment, seethes with disinformation and human toxicity. Today’s culture of gadgetry, while admittedly jaw-droppingly futuristic, seems only to have enslaved our minds and lifestyles rather than set us free. Like the Declarations of old, the concept of what could have been remains a bitter contrast to what we experience today. “All men are created equal,” pens Jefferson. “Don’t be evil,” promises Google. Cue nervous laughter.
Before my re-admission to San Jose State University, I briefly explored a career in law, studying at De Anza College and working in multiple law firms. But I came away with the impression of a gray area; subversions and maneuvering at odds with my sense of right and wrong. Ironically, this desire to manifest my internal sense of morality is what drew me to law in the first place - I find myself passionately drawn to be the voice for the voiceless, to fight for those who are wronged, suppressed, and exploited. I realized while my intentions would always remain constant regardless of my chosen career path, the avenue of expression would have a huge impact on the effectiveness of my message.
Consequently, this experience provided me with a fresh perspective and a new appreciation for the power of the digital frontier I had left behind. Our digital age is full of opportunity for those with the skill to wield it, for better or worse. As a digital media artist, I choose better. My return to San Jose State is defined by a burning desire to finish my studies and begin making my mark on the world - leaving everything in my path better than when I found it. My goal is to use my freedom of thought to harness the powerful tools, knowledge, and networks available in the information age to make this frontier a better place, improving experiences for people around the world.
In digital art practice, I am drawn to data visualization, user experience research and design, and technical writing. I am ready to do my part to prepare myself for a career in these fields, using my talents as a tangible force for good in the world. Whether designing a new way to re-enable a disability, visualizing data to draw attention to a societal problem, or translating difficult technological concepts into plain, engaging language for everyone to learn about and understand, I intend to stake a claim on this frontier in the name of those who cannot.
